Choosing the right rug size is one of the most important — and most overlooked — decisions in decorating a room. Too small, and even the most beautiful handwoven rug can feel like an afterthought. Too large, and it overwhelms the space. Get it right, and a rug ties the whole room together with warmth, texture, and soul.

At Dhurrie World, our rugs are handwoven by skilled artisans in Jaipur using natural fibres like jute, cotton, and wool. Each piece is made to last — so it's worth taking a moment to find the perfect fit for your space.

The Golden Rule: Always Go Bigger Than You Think

The most common mistake people make is choosing a rug that's too small. A rug should anchor your furniture, not hide under it. As a general guide, aim to have at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs resting on the rug.

Rug Sizes by Room

Living Room

For a standard living room, a 5×8 ft rug works well in smaller spaces, while a 8×10 ft or 9×12 ft rug suits larger seating arrangements. Ideally, all four legs of your sofa should sit on the rug, or at minimum the front two legs.

  • Small living room (under 12×12 ft): 5×8 ft rug
  • Medium living room: 8×10 ft rug
  • Large or open-plan living room: 9×12 ft or larger

Dining Room

Your rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond each side of the dining table so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. For a 6-seater table, a 8×10 ft rug is usually ideal.

Bedroom

In a bedroom, you want to feel the rug underfoot when you step out of bed. For a queen bed, a 8×10 ft rug placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed works beautifully. For a king bed, go up to 9×12 ft.

  • Twin bed: 5×8 ft
  • Queen bed: 8×10 ft
  • King bed: 9×12 ft

Entryway or Hallway

A runner rug works perfectly here. Choose one that leaves a few inches of floor visible on either side for a clean, intentional look.

How to Measure Your Space

Before you shop, grab a tape measure and mark out the rug area on your floor using painter's tape. This simple trick lets you visualise exactly how a rug will look and feel in the room — and it can save you from a costly mistake.

Choosing the Right Shape

Most rooms suit a rectangular rug, which follows the natural lines of furniture. Round rugs work beautifully under a round dining table or as a centrepiece in a reading nook. For hallways and narrow spaces, a runner is the natural choice.
